Temporal Tendonitis Part B

In Part A, we briefly discussed the disordered termed Temporal Tendonitis. Dr. Wesley Shankland has written and lectured extensively on temporal tendonitis and other pain disorders. The common symptoms of temporal tendonitis are: Temporal headache pain TMJ pain Ear stuffiness Ear pain Pain in and behind the eye Nausea (at times) Posterior tooth pain even if the teeth are missing The most common cause of temporal tendonitis is trauma to the head, lower jaw or neck. Dr. Wesley Shankland has also determined that another very common cause is having the mouth opened for a prolonged period of time (for example, intubation for general anesthesia, having the mouth open wide for oral surgery or other dental procedures). Temporal tendonitis is very often misdiagnosed as migraine headache or tension headache pain and therefore, usually treated inappropriately. If you or a loved-one has some of these symptoms and a history of undiagnosed headache pain, see Dr. Wesley Shankland for an... read more

Temporal Tendonitis

Have you ever suffered with a headache that no matter what you did, the headache pain would not stop. This type of headache usually affects one or both temples, makes the ears feel clogged and can even produce lateral eye pain. This type of headache often occurs after trauma to the jaw, have your mouth open for long periods of time (for example, a long dental appointment) or being put to sleep for surgery. This is a very common headache disorder treated by Dr. Wesley Shankland, called temporal tendinitis. It is one of the most common causes of temple headache pain. It is often initiated by auto accident or other types of trauma to the head and neck and is complicated diagnostically by confusing the symptoms with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. As with all pain management, diagnosis is key. Goethe’s maxim says, “What ones knows, one sees.” Conversely, what one does not know, one does not see. Dr. Wesley Shankland feels that the finest service any doctor can provide to his or her patients is determining an accurate diagnosis. Appropriate and effective diagnosis and treatment of neck and head injuries requires both dental and medical knowledge in the areas of mouth, soft tissue, and TM joint and upper back. If the patient has jaw joint pain and soft tissue pain, the clinician must determine which is primary and which is secondary in the diagnostic stream. In particular, it is crucial to first assess the condition of the jaw joint and its muscles and tendons before proceeding to adjust or grind the teeth. Teeth Grinding in Central Ohio part 2

Do you grind your teeth when you sleep? Do you grind your teeth during the day when you concentrate or when you’re frustrated? Many people do both of these harmful habits and don’t even realize it. But Dr. Wesley Shankland can determine if you grind your teeth and he can help stop the detrimental effects of this pathological activity. In our last blog, Dr. Wesley Shankland briefly discussed teeth grinding. This habit can not only destroy your teeth, but the bone around the teeth and even your temporomandibular joints (jaw joints). You might experience headache and ear pain, neck pain and tooth pain, especially with cold foods and drinks. Also, people who are under stress frequently grind their teeth unknowingly. They might do this for years, damaging and destroying their teeth and yet, they initially deny engaging in this destructive habit. Dr. Wesley Shankland has been treating these problems for over 30 years. Dr. Wesley Shankland sees patients from all over the world for such problems which are most often either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. He will perform a very extensive physical examination and attempt to determine why you’re grinding your teeth. Usually, grinding of the teeth can be treated effectively and conservatively with the use of an intra-oral, removable appliance. This appliance is adjusted over a period of time until your grinding symptoms are reduced or cured. A very effective way to treat clenching (intense biting down with little or no lateral jaw movement) is with an NTI appliance. Dr. Shankland has used the NTI appliance in Westerville (a suburb of Columbus in Central Ohio) since 1999. In fact,... read more

Teeth Grinding in Central Ohio Part 1

Do you grind your teeth when you sleep? Do you grind your teeth during the day when you concentrate or when you’re frustrated? Many people do both of these harmful habits and don’t even realize it. But Dr. Wesley Shankland in Westerville, Ohio (a suburb of Columbus) can determine if you grind your teeth and he can help stop the detrimental effects of this pathological activity. Teeth grinding is cause by several problems. First, people who are under stress frequently grind their teeth unknowingly. They might do this for years, damaging and destroying their teeth and yet, they initially deny engaging in this destructive habit. Dr. Wesley Shankland has been treating these problems for over 30 years. Another common cause of tooth grinding is a high filling, crown or denture. If your dentist places a filling or crown and especially if you’re numb due to a local anesthetic, when you first close your teeth together, you usually can’t tell if the occlusion (bite) is improper or not. But after the effects of the anesthetic wear off, then the bite seems strange. Such a change in your occlusion may not bother you at all until you’re under stress or when you sleep. Then, unconsciously, you begin to grind your teeth in an unconscious attempt to even the bite. This activity can cause headache pain, tooth and jaw pain, ear pain and general fatigue of the facial muscles. If you think you’re grinding your teeth and if you’re in the Central Ohio area, don’t delay in getting an accurate diagnosis and possible subsequent treatment.
